There’s a special light that touches everything before a summer rain in the Pacific Northwest. The gray of the sky, the water, the trees, and the wild grasses embraces this light and gives everything a soft tint of pale green that. It is a soothing, calming, and exceptionally beautiful moment of nature at its most amazing. I’ve tried to capture this moment of exceptional light by starting with a stark gray and white scene and then washing it with the faintest touch of green. I wanted it to be peaceful and contemplative, just like the moment it inspired.

HOPE

Many of my monochrome paintings use only black, white, and gray to convey the depths of emotional despair. They are stark and meant to make people feel what I and others feel during those times. I also like to paint windows because they divide the inside from the outside. But when I thought I was done with this one I had this urge to add a bit of hope to the starkness, so I painted in a jar of flowers on the ledge to let some light in through the cracks.
